Museum Maxhütte

Maxhutte mountains

a focal point of industrial history

in Chiemgau.

Pangraz von Feyberg founded the ironworks in Bergen in 1562. In the middle of the 19th century it was one of the most important iron manufacturers in Bavaria.

After a devastating fire and the subsequent reconstruction in 1824 under King Max I Josef, the factory was given the name "Maximilianshütte". In the course of the far-reaching industrial changes, Bergen stopped ore mining in 1881 and a little later also the blast furnace production. The Maximilianshütte changed from an iron producer to a foundry and machine builder. With the global economic crisis, the plant got into economic difficulties, which ultimately led to its closure in 1932.
