Its most magnificent and most expensive castle should have been Herrenchiemsee, more expensive than Linderhof and Neuschwanstein combined. When King Ludwig II died, it was far from finished. But even if it is not completed, it inspires hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. You can reach the completed rooms on the upper floor via the grand staircase , including the large mirror gallery, which becomes a concert hall every year during the Herrenchiemsee Festival. If you are interested in concerts, here you have an experience for the eyes and ears that you will not soon forget. The splendid parade bedroom and the dining room, with its famous "little table deck you" , are among the other highlights of every tour. The palace also has a magnificent garden with a large fountain. The tour is a real treat for the eyes. This opulence is hard to understand.
Herrenchiemsee is probably the only island in the world with two castles. In addition to the “New Palace” of King Ludwig II, there is also the Augustinian Canon Monastery , which is also known as the “Old Palace” . The current monastery building was built in the Baroque era and now houses, among other things, a gallery with works by the Chiemsee painter Julius Exter . Those interested in history certainly know that the foundation for the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany was laid here at the Constitutional Convention in 1948.
The guided tours in the New Palace take place continuously in German. You should allow around 30 minutes to tour the castle. Guided tours in English are offered twice an hour in summer and once an hour in winter.
For families with children children guided tours of the castle. These tours are interactive and ideal for children aged 6 to 12. In the summer months and in all Bavarian winter vacation times, the children's tours start at 11:05 a.m., 1:05 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. In the winter months, a children's tour is only offered at 3:05 p.m.
The Herreninsel can only be reached by sea. Steamers run regularly from various locations on the banks of the Chiemsee. These will also bring you to the Fraueninsel . If you want to visit both islands and enjoy them extensively, it is best to plana whole day .
